What is the normal process for quilting?

The traditional method of making quilts involves the composition of three layers, that is,

  • The top layer
  • Batting/insulating material
  • The last layer as backing material

Quilting is not only limited for creating quilts but can also contribute to the interiors of the rooms or hallways as decorative sheets or printed/designed quilts on the walls as per bright and color depictive hanging piece.

Apart from stitching the three layers of padding together only comprises of a small part of the quilting process but there are other processes which helps in making this art piece happen,

It is the process which involves creating quilt blocks which are created by sewing together fabrics to present them in a patterned design, it may contain fabric blocks sewed together as in 4 patch work or even to accumulate complicated techniques and design structures within.

It is where all of the creative work is done and given formation to which includes color combination, fabrics arrangement that inclined with the needs of a pattern and design, organizing different quilt blocks which are completed or under the process to be finished.

It consists of small components or parts of decorative pieces which can be added to the quilt work and supports the finished material, these can be added by sewing together by machine or by sewing by hands, some other forms of appliques consists of reverse applique, needle-turn applique, bias applique.

It is the final step to give a finished touch to the quilts which contains binding together the top layer, batting material and the backing material with a piece that smooths the raw edges of the quilt and holds the padding firmly. The other forms includes bias bindings, straight brain bindings and single fold bindings.

Some processes applied for creating the quilts:

Machine Quilting

The process which uses a sewing machine to tack the layers together with the help of quilting initially pinned with the help of bigger sized safety pins, whereas a long-arm machine uses a frame having bars is a much faster way to complete quilts than any traditional sewing machine.

Hand Quilting

The ancient method of quilting where craftsmen and quilters used to stitch layers with the help of needle and a thread. The stab stitch and the needle stitch are relevant ways for stitching together the piece.

The faster method to sew and create a quilt is through a process of tying where the three layers are tied together with the help of multiple strands of yarns or threads seeing that the knot doesn’t tangle while dry cleaned or washed.
